Nagma Mohammed Omer

Opening Reception, March 5, 2010 6:00-9:00p.m.

Outsider Art is often idiosyncratic, but its merits come from the pure, unedited spontaneous gestures by the artist. The work, created by an “imaginative process generally untouched by external influences”, (‘Imagining the Outsider’, John Beardsley; Vernacular Visionaries, Annie Carlano, 2003) offers an undeniable beauty.  Valhall Arts is pleased to present Nagma Mohammed Omer, a Middle Eastern artist that has gone ‘outside’ in her own culture.  The beautiful oil paintings, unveiled figurative works, go against the societal and religious expectations of her region, and show the bravery of her creative pursuits with the bold color, expressive lines, and compositional choices.  The paintings offer a unique vision into life in the community of her region.  The exhibit is a peaceful and quiet conversation between two misunderstood cultures, a brief encounter and a chance to gain valuable insight into another way of life.  All works are offered by silent auction, with proceeds going directly to the artist.

The exhibit will also feature photographs from the Arabian Peninsula, also offered by silent auction, benefiting a women’s emergency room, at a regional hospital.

The opening reception will be Friday March 5, 2010 from 6:00-9:00 p.m., with a second reception on April 2, 2010 from 6:00-9:00 p.m.  The exhibition will continue through May 1.

Please join us at the gallery on Saturday April 10, 2010 at 1:00 pm., for a discussion led by Hollie Kopp, an Instructor of Cultural Anthropology at Front Range Community College.  Hollie teaches several sections of Cultural and Physical Anthropology, and is currently writing the first “Anthropology of the Islamic World” course to be offered at FRCC.  Hollie spent two years studying hijab, and the U.S. Muslim community.  Her research findings were published in a Spring Edition of the The Muslim World in 2002.
